Senator hosts event for women veterans to discuss challenges they face

SACRAMENTO–Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) hosted an event today to connect Solano County’s women veterans with their peers, as well as services, benefits, and other resources at the Solano County Women Veterans’ Summit.

The focal point of the event, cosponsored by the Solano Community College, was the presentation of the California Research Bureau report “California’s Women Veterans: The Challenges and Needs of Those Who Served.” This is the first comprehensive U.S. report on the unique challenges and needs facing women veterans.

“California is home to nearly 167,000 women veterans, more than any other state. Despite their numbers and their service, there is a pervasive misconception that women aren’t real veterans who can’t even have combat experience. They can and do, and they have the mental and physical scars to prove it,” said Wolk. “This event was an opportunity to put women veterans in a room together so they could share their stories and get access to the resources they need.”

The event also included:

• A presentation of California Research Bureau report;
• An update on State and Federal legislation affecting women veterans;
• An expert panel discussion addressing returning women veterans’ specific issues; and
• Information booths to connect women veterans with additional information and resources.
