8. The State Of Affairs For Veterans Seeking Jobs. NPR posted audio "All Things Considered" conducted with Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki for its Wednesday program. Shinseki, who is Detroit for what NPR calls a "job fair" for vets, said VA is hosting the fair because such events give employers the "opportunity to meet" vets and "see their skills," their "discipline," and "their motivation." He stressed that employers should not be afraid to hire vets because of concerns about post-traumatic stress disorder and that VA has a number of programs in place to help lower the unemployment rate for young male vets, including the Post-9/11 GI Bill. When pressed by the NPR interviewer, Shinseki said he did not know if anyone can say why the unemployment rate is high for such vets, but he emphasized that VA is "focused" on bringing it down. He also said that going forward VA will continue hosting events like the one in Detroit. Michigan Radio "Thousands are expected at Detroit's Cobo Center this week, for events meant to help veterans gain a foothold in the job market. The National Veterans Small Business Conference and Expo, and an accompanying job fair and veterans open house, is being touted as a major event to connect veterans with job opportunities." On Wednesday, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder was at the Cobo Center, as was Shinseki, who addressed the National Veterans Small Business Conference and Expo. Shinseki told those in attendance that they have an "extraordinary opportunity" to help unemployed vets. He added that he wants vets "employed and small business contracts rolling before the end of the summer."
9. Shinseki, Michigan Gov. Try To Help Unemployed Vets. Detroit News Michigan gov. 10. Vet-Targeted Website To Be Turned Over To Feds. AP "A California-based company accused of preying on veterans for their education benefits agreed Wednesday to pay $2.5 million to 20 states and turn over its...GIBill.com" website to the US Veterans Affairs Department. The "consumer protection settlement between the states and QuinStreet Inc. was filed Wednesday in a Frankfort, Ky., court." On Wednesday, VA Deputy Secretary Scott Gould "called the settlement a 'positive step toward ensuring our veterans have the education opportunities they've earned." Gould also said "predatory, aggressive and deceptive marketing directly inhibits our ability to ensure" that vets understand their options when it comes to attending college. New York Times "Under a consumer protection settlement with 20 state attorneys general filed Wednesday in Frankfort, QuinStreet Inc. will turn over its GIBill.com Web site to the Department of Veterans Affairs and pay $2.5 million to the states involved." Veterans "have been the targets of aggressive recruiting by for-profit colleges, which are required to get at least 10 percent of their revenues from sources other than federal student loan or Pell grants. A loophole provides that veterans' benefits count toward that 10 percent." Huffington Post "Attorneys general in 20 states announced a settlement Wednesday with an online marketing company that aims to connect for-profit college recruiters with veterans who have generous educational benefits from the government. The group of top prosecutors claimed that QuinStreet Inc. uses 'false, deceptive and misleading representations,' such as the domain name www.gibill.com, that have the potential to deceive users into believing that the site is somehow endorsed by the federal government." Veterans "groups and members of Congress have stepped up criticism of for-profit colleges over the past year, arguing that such schools are targeting service members -- and their generous federal tuition benefits -- as a way of increasing revenues."
