    WASHINGTON JPMorgan Chase & Co. is repaying more than $2 million to about 4,000 military families who were overcharged for their mortgages.

    The House bill was the first action of the new year by Guam Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo, who was sworn in this month following her re-election in November. Bordallo has said the reparations are her top priority in Congress.

     

    9.      Study: Proactive counseling stems troops’ mental ills.

    A battlefield study conducted by the Army on 20,000 soldiers during the troop surge in Iraq shows that more aggressive efforts to question and counsel GIs about their mental health reduce by nearly 80% the number who develop behavioral health illnesses during combat.  The results of the study, to be published today in the American Journal of Psychiatry, also show that 54% fewer soldiers contemplated suicide and that the number who needed to be sent home from Iraq with mental health problems dropped by nearly 70%.

Operation Desert Storm: 20 Years Later.   By Brandon Friedman January 16, 2011 at 2:16 pm.  On the evening of January 16, 1991, I was with my parents and brother at the Pierre Bossier mall in Bossier City, Louisiana collecting autographs. Several members of the Houston Astros were there as part of a regional winter PR tour. Like Ralphie waiting in line for Santa Claus in A Christmas Story, this was a big deal to me. Shaft" column, the (1/19, Fales, 77K) praises the Department of Veterans Affairs for establishing Supportive Services for Veterans Families, a prevention program that "seeks to help veterans and families who are on the verge of becoming homeless."

    13.  VA Hospital Officials Reaching Out To Vets. According to the Hagerstown (MD) Herald-Mail (1/19, Dearth, 31K), officials from the Veterans Affairs hospital in Martinsburg, West Virginia, including Ann R. Brown, the hospital's director, "were in Hagerstown on Tuesday," at "VA's Outpatient Clinic on Opal Court," to "let those who served in the military know that they are entitled to receive quality health care.

    14. VA Connecticut To Help Establish Center Of Excellence Education Program. The Hartford (CT) Business Journal (1/19) reports, "The Connecticut veterans' health system has qualified for $1 million annually to devise innovative training and tools for primary care physicians, nurses and other care providers."

    15. Defense Department To Administer Osteoporosis Research Grant For VA. The Little Rock-based Arkansas Business (1/19, Carter) reports, "BiologicsMD has been awarded a $2.3 million research grant" from the US Defense Department. BiologicsMD, a "University of Arkansas startup, has developed a treatment for osteoporosis that binds to the bone and spurs new bone growth, reversing the effects of the disease.
