MIKULSKI ANNOUNCES SENATE PASSAGE OF BILL TO REDUCE RED TAPE FOR UNEMPLOYED VETERANS
Veteran Skills to Jobs Act will allow veterans with relevant training to quickly transition into civilian workforce
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), a member of the Senate Veterans Jobs Caucus, today announced Senate passage of the Veterans Skills to Jobs Act. The bill requires federal agencies to recognize relevant military training and skills when certifying veterans for federal licenses. The legislation now moves to the White House to be signed into law by President Obama.
“Our men and women in uniform who have fought for our freedom shouldn’t have to fight through red tape and stand in line for a job when they come home from fighting on the front lines,” Senator Mikulski said. “After serving our country honorably, all veterans deserve the chance to earn a paycheck and support their families. I’m proud that this legislation will help our veterans use the skills they have to get the jobs they need.”
Many veterans with specialized skills find that when they leave the service, states and federal agencies do not recognize the training they received in the military. They are required to go through duplicative training and certification for jobs they trained for and executed while serving our country, preventing them from quickly integrating into the workforce. Unemployment for post-9/11 veterans is 9.5 percent.
The Veterans Skills to Jobs Act requires federal agencies to recognize relevant military training when certifying veterans for federal licenses. Each agency head will determine if training received in the military is acceptable. Instead of spending time retraining, veterans will be able to receive federal credentials and quickly transition into the civilian workforce.
Senator Mikulski has been a strong advocate for veterans and military families. She led the fight for the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration program to help vets reintegrate into civilian lives and connect with potential employers. Senator Mikulski was also a vocal proponent of the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011, which provides veterans with job training and education while encouraging businesses to hire disabled and unemployed veterans.
