Female WWII Veterans Awarded Gold Medal

Female WWII Veterans Awarded Gold Medal
Washington, D.C. (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - Missouri U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today met with veterans from the World War II era Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) in Washington, D.C. The veterans were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for their service during World War II, for fly8ing fighter, bomber, transport and training aircraft as part the U.S. war effort.

The Missouri senator stated that ""It's about time we honored these four Missouri women and their colleagues, all of whom showed remarkable courage in the fight for freedom," McCaskill said. "These heroic veterans will be remembered as pioneers who helped pave the way for women serving bravely in our military today."

Of the 1,000 original WASP that flew missions during World War II, only 300 survive today. Many of which traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the Gold Medal Ceremony. The medal will be placed in the Smithsonian Museum, allowing all Americans to see their contributions to the country.
