Texas veterans groups can apply for funds

    The Texas Veterans Commission is accepting requests for funding from groups aiding members of the armed services.

    The Texas Veterans Commission will award up to $3 million in grants to charitable organizations, Veterans Service Organizations and local government agencies to provide assistance to vets.

    The money can be used for a range of areas, including transportation to medical facilities, counseling for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, housing assistance for homeless vets and family and child services.

    Qualified groups must submit their requests for funding to the Texas Veterans Commission no later than March 10.

    James Nier, executive director of the Texas Veterans Commission, says 1.7 million veterans live in Texas, including more than 100,000 who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    “They have paid a high price for keeping our country free. These grants help to ensure that our veterans and their families receive the services they need and deserve,” he says.

    The Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance primarily receives its funding from the Texas Lottery scratch-off game, Veterans Cash. Since the state introduced the ticket on Nov. 11, 2009, sales have generated more than $4 million to the Texas Veterans Commission.
